Professors Lake Brampton:
Originally a sand and gravel pit, Professors
Lake was produced by extracting sand and gravel below the water table.
This 100 acre Brampton sand and gravel pit was first opened in 1918, later
closed for a time and reopened again in 1954. The operation ceased in 1973.
In its lifetime, this operation supplied an estimated 20 million tonnes
of sand and gravel to the Toronto area.
Today the main feature of the Professor's Lake complex is a 65 acre spring
fed lake. It is used extensively for sailing, windsurfing, fishing and
non-motorized boats. Other recreational pursuits include the beach, waterslide,
volleyball, tennis, playgrounds, a lakeside pathway for walking, bicycling
or inline-skating, and ice-skating in the winter. The lake is surrounded
by a proud residential community with the City of Brampton Professor's
Lake Recreation Centre located on the south shore. The Recreation Centre,
built in 1982, includes a boathouse, beach, picnic area, food concessions,
and meeting rooms.
